Pribilof-Islands
are a four-island archipelago about 300 miles off the coast of Alaska in the Bering Sea. Formerly called the Northern Fur Seal Islands, the Pribilofs are about 77 square miles in total area with a population of around 600 residents. The main islands are St. Paul and St. George, each with a town of the same name where most of the people live. The Pribilof Islands are part of the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge. There is little on the islands in the way of vegetation or trees, but the shoreline and cliffs are teaming with wildlife, which is what draws visitors to the islands. The villages of St. Paul and St. George, which are the are the world's largest indigenous Aleut villages, provide services to the wildlife enthusiasts that visit the islands. The Pribilof Islands are home to the largest gathering of marine mammals in the world, and to more than 2.5 million seabirds. The island of St. George has the largest seabird colony in the Northern Hemisphere. Its easy to reach the island cliffs to photograph the birds where more than 230 species are sighted during the summer. On St. Paul is a high cliff wall, called Ridge Wall, above the Bering Sea, from which to observe the birds. On the beaches, blinds have been erected to observe the northern fur seals, Steller sea lions, walruses and sea otters. The hunting of seals is forbidden in the Pribilofs, except for subsistence. The local economy relies heavily on the taking of snow crab and halibut, and working for the government.

South-central Alaska has a subarctic climate, with strong oceanic influences. This part of Alaska gets less rain, but more snow, than the southeast Panhandle region. Summers are short and cool to mild, and winters are long and cold. There are frequent, strong southeast winds, known as the Knik wind, in this area, especially in the winter. Rains are frequent in late summer, but not abundant in total amounts. The number of frost-free summer days number 101. The latitude in this region causes summer days to be very long and winter days to be very short. It is also generally very cloudy during winter. Due to the proximity to active volcanoes, ash hazards may occur and are significant, but not frequent.
