Hope
is a small community located on the northern end of the Kenai Peninsula in south-central Alaska. As of the 2010 census, the population was 192 residents. Hope lies on the south shore of the Turnagain Arm of Cook Inlet on the 17-mile Hope Highway, northwest of the Seward Highway. The town of Hope began as a mining camp for Resurrection Creek and was first known as Hope City. Parts of the town were destroyed in the 1964 Good Friday earthquake. Hope is a quiet, laid back town with a charming historic district. Other attractions in town include a hundred-year-old bar that is still in operation, a museum chronicling the life of early Hope settlers, an art gallery, and several restaurants. Called "the historical mountain getaway by the sea," Hope is home to several bed and breakfasts and cozy cabins. There' also a retreat center in the heart of Hope, owned and run by the United Methodist Church. It's a great place for family getaways, youth group retreats, or any type of club or organization gathering. There are several trails in the area for hiking, biking and skiing. Other things to do include rafting, canoeing, kayaking, world-class fishing, marine wildlife cruises, even gold panning. For its' small size, the town of Hope has a lot to offer and shouldn't be overlooked for a quiet, peaceful spot from which to explore south-central Alaska.

South-central Alaska has a subarctic climate, with strong oceanic influences. This region gets less rain, but more snow, than the southeast Panhandle region. Summers are short and cool to mild, and winters are long and cold. There are frequent, strong southeast winds, known as the Knik wind, in this area, especially in the winter. Rains are frequent in late summer. The number of frost-free summer days number 101. The latitude in this region causes summer days to be very long and winter days to be very short. It is also generally very cloudy during winter. Due to the proximity to active volcanoes, ash hazards may occur and are significant, but not frequent.
