Anchorage
is located in south-central Alaska and is the state's largest city. More than 40 percent of Alaska's entire population lives within the city and surrounding area. As of the 2010 census, the population of Anchorage was 291,826. Four times named an All-American City by the National Civic League, Anchorage is a vibrant, eclectic mix of cultures and activities. The Chugach National Forest extends into the southern part of the city, and a very diverse wildlife population exists within the area, including black bears, grizzly bears and moose. It's not at all uncommon to see moose wandering the city. Visitors are warned to be cautious of them when using the city trails. Anchorage is a colorful city, especially in summer when more than 80,000 flowers are planted. The long daylight hours and cool temperatures produce flowers with vibrant hues that are seen overflowing from hanging baskets and in hundreds of gardens. Places to visit include the Town Square Municipal Park and Alaska Center for Performing Arts, Museum of Natural History, Aviation Heritage Museum, the Alaska Zoo, Alaska Botanical Center, and the Eagle River Nature Center. Outdoor recreation is prime in Anchorage. You can engage in eco tours, glacier and wildlife cruises, charter a private boat, go dog sledding, or panning for gold. Other activities in Anchorage include biking, hiking, ice climbing, kayaking, canoeing, fishing, four-wheeling, golf, skiing, snowboarding, snowmobiling. Where else do you have such a wide variety of activities - including viewing the Northern Lights, best seen in the months of September and March. Special events also abound in Anchorage, including the famous "Make It Alaskan" festival in October.

South-central Alaska has a subarctic climate, with strong oceanic influences. This part of Alaska gets less rain, but more snow, than the southeast Panhandle region. Summers are short and cool to mild, and winters are long and cold. There are frequent, strong southeast winds, known as the Knik wind, in this area, especially in the winter. Rains are frequent in late summer, but not abundant in total amounts. The number of frost-free summer days number 101. The latitude in this region causes summer days to be very long and winter days to be very short. It is also generally very cloudy during winter. Due to the proximity to active volcanoes, ash hazards may occur and are significant, but not frequent.
