Eklutna
Lake is located in the heart of the beautiful Chugach Mountains within Alaska's Chugach State Park. The park is situated within the municipality of Anchorage and is the third largest state park in the United States. Seven-mile long Eklutna Lake was formed by freshwater and glacial streams flowing into valley as the Eklutna Glacier retreated. There is evidence of the glacier's retreat visible in the rocky boulders of the area. Today, Eklutna Lake a very popular recreational spot. Eklutna Lake is known for its' year-round campground, which offers 50 sites with fresh water, restrooms, fire pits and picnic tables. Other activities to enjoy include fishing, boating, kayaking, wind surfing, sailing, hiking, biking, horseback riding and mountain climbing. Wintertime activities include cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, and dog sledding. Wildlife viewing and photography are popular anytime of year. However, come prepared as the weather can change rapidly in the valley, bringing high winds. Interpretive displays and a telescope for viewing wildlife is located near the trailhead parking lot. Eklutna Lake also provides power and drinking water for the Anchorage metropolitan area.

Eklutna Weather & Climate

South-central Alaska has cool summers and bitterly cold winters. The summer weather is tempered by the relatively warm ocean waters to the south and the Alaska Range to the north, which protects it from the very cold temperatures common to interior Alaska. Summer temperatures are in the 60s and 70s, with occasional highs in the 80s. Winter temperatures average around 6.4 degrees F. minimum, but may fall to 20 degrees below zero and rise above freezing later on. September is the wettest month of the year. Summertime weather is typically cloudy, although sunny skies are not uncommon. This region receives about 50 inches of snowfall in the winter. There are two glaciers in the area, the Matanuska Glacier and the Knik Glacier. Wind blows off of these glaciers and funnels into the region.
