Chugiak
is a small community located within the municipality of Anchorage, about 20 miles northeast of that city's downtown area. The population is approximately 8,300 residents. Chugiak is one of the fastest growing suburban communities near the city of Anchorage. It's home to the Birchwood Shooting & Recreational Park, (adjacent to the Birchwood Airport), which is the largest rifle, pistol, and shotgun range facility in the State of Alaska. The park is the site of the annual Alaska State Trap and Skeet competitions. Outdoor activities abound in the Chugiak area. Some of the more popular ones include hiking, canoeing, rafting, fishing, back-country exploring, camping, alpine and cross-country skiing. Some park lands in the area have been designated for use by all-terrain vehicles and for dog sledding and ski joring. Places of interest near Chugiak include Thunderbird Falls and the Chugach State Park Eagle River Nature Center, a hands-on interpretive nature center. Self-guided trails are also available at the state park. Eklutna Village Historical Park is located in the native village of the Eklutna and home to the St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Church, the oldest building in Anchorage, built in 1830.

Chugiak Weather & Climate

South-central Alaska has cool summers and bitterly cold winters. The summer weather is tempered by the relatively warm ocean waters to the south and the Alaska Range to the north, which protects it from the very cold temperatures common to interior Alaska. Summer temperatures are in the 60s and 70s, with occasional highs in the 80s. Winter temperatures average around 6.4 degrees F. minimum, but may fall to 20 degrees below zero and rise above freezing later on. September is the wettest month of the year. Summertime weather is typically cloudy, although sunny skies are not uncommon. This region receives about 50 inches of snowfall in the winter. There are two glaciers in the area, the Matanuska Glacier and the Knik Glacier. Wind blows off of these glaciers and funnels into the region.
