Big-Lake
is a small community located in south-central Alaska, about 60 miles north of Anchorage. The population is approximately 2,700 residents. The community of Big Lake sits along the shores of Big Lake, which is a popular fishing and boating lake in the summer months. Many Anchorage residents own vacation homes in the area. The area around Big Lake was originally settled by the Athabascan Denaina Indians. In the late 1800s, the first sled dog trail was made through the area and into the Talkeetna Mountains, which helped carve the way for homesteaders in the early part of the 20th century. More settlers arriving after World War II, and the area has continued to grow ever since. Activities at Big Lake include boating, fishing, water and jet-skiing, canoeing, ice-fishing, cross country skiing and snowmachining (snowmobiling.) There are public use cabins for rent at Big Lake, picnic areas, restaurants, grocery stores and shopping in the town itself. The lake is also home to a resort that sits right on the lake and offers upscale accommodations and services for weddings and conferences. Big Lake is just west of the town of Wasilla, and just an hour to the city of Anchorage. Close enough for all services and attractions of the city, yet peaceful and quiet with some of the most incredible scenery you'll ever see.

Big Lake Weather & Climate

The south-central region of Alaska has cool summers and bitterly cold winters. The summer weather is tempered by the relatively warm ocean waters to the south and the Alaska Range to the north, which protects it from the very cold temperatures common to interior Alaska. Summer temperatures rise into the 70s, with occasional highs in the 80s, however night time readings may fall into the 40s. Winter temperatures average around 6.4 degrees F. minimum, but may fall to 20 degrees below zero and rise above freezing later on. September is the wettest month of the year. Summertime weather is typically cloudy, although sunny skies are not uncommon. This region receives about 50 inches of snowfall in the winter. There are two glaciers in the area, the Matanuska Glacier and the Knik Glacier. Wind blows off of these glaciers and funnels into the region.
