Nancy-Lake
is located about a 90-minute drive north of Anchorage on Parks Highway. It's one of the few areas in Alaska set aside specifically for recreational purposes. The entire Nancy Lake recreation area is a combination of lakes, wetlands, forest and incredible wildlife. Canoeing is popular at Nancy Lake, especially because it's a great way to get a close-up look at some of the park's wildlife. Arctic Terns are summer residents of the area, returning to nest in the wetlands after wintering 12,000 miles away in the Antarctic. Moose and black bear are common throughout the park, and grizzly bears are also spotted occasionally. One of the most popular attractions to this area is the Lynx Lake Leep Canoe Trail, which travels through an eight-mile chain of lakes. Other summertime activities include fishing, camping and hiking, although hiking is limited due to the terrain. The main hiking trail is the Red Shirt Lake Trail, which follows the tops of glacial drumlins and moraines and, in spots, provides panoramic views of the area's lakes. There are 8 lakeside campsites located at the end of this three-mile trail. Things to do in winter at Nancy Lake include ice fishing, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, dog sledding and snowmobiling. Keep in mind that winter temperatures in this area can fall to 40 below zero or colder, so please take proper precautions.

The south-central region of Alaska has cool summers and bitterly cold winters. The summer weather is tempered by the relatively warm ocean waters to the south and the Alaska Range to the north, which protects it from the very cold temperatures common to interior Alaska. Summer temperatures rise into the 70s, with occasional highs in the 80s, however night time readings may fall into the 40s. Winter temperatures average around 6.4 degrees F. minimum, but may fall to 20 degrees below zero and rise above freezing later on. September is the wettest month of the year. Summertime weather is typically cloudy, although sunny skies are not uncommon. This region receives about 50 inches of snowfall in the winter. There are two glaciers in the area, the Matanuska Glacier and the Knik Glacier. Wind blows off of these glaciers and funnels into the region.
