Bird-Creek
River is located south of Anchorage and is the first major salmon river as you head out on the Seward Highway. It's a popular spot for tourists as it's not too far from the city, but is in a beautiful natural setting in what is called "The Real Alaska." The river has always had a very productive Silver Salmon run. There is a viewing platform just east of where the river passes under the Seward Highway, so if you are fishing it, you'll be "on display" as tourists stop to admire the scenery and "Alaska fishing." To ease some major problems with parking and dangers of fishermen crossing the very busy Seward Highway, the state has been working on a major parking lot construction project. The Bird Creek area covers 495,204 acres. Activities, besides fishing, include hiking, picnicking, wildlife viewing, biking and hiking. There are 28 campsites at Bird Creek, with a fee of $15.00 and a limit of seven nights. All campsites are wooded sites with fire rings and picnic tables, water and latrines. Campground hosts offer assistance and firewood is usually available near the hosts site for a small fee. Fishing tip: Fish the creek on the rising tide, as fish will start to build up at the mouth at low tide, and will start moving into the creek as the tide rises. All areas are not fishable at high tide. If you're visiting Anchorage and want to get a taste of what it's like to really "fish Alaska," Bird Creek is a great day trip and fulfills that wish.

South-central Alaska has a subarctic climate, with strong oceanic influences. This region gets less rain, but more snow, than the southeast Panhandle region. Summers are short and cool to mild, and winters are long and cold. There are frequent, strong southeast winds, known as the Knik wind, in this area, especially in the winter. Rains are frequent in late summer. The number of frost-free summer days number 101. The latitude in this region causes summer days to be very long and winter days to be very short. It is also generally very cloudy during winter. Due to the proximity to active volcanoes, ash hazards may occur and are significant, but not frequent.
