Girdwood
is a year-round ski resort community located within the Municipality of Anchorage, Alaska. It lies in a valley in the Chugach Mountains near the end of the Turnagain Arm of Cook Inlet, approximately 36 miles southeast of Anchorage proper. Girdwood is surrounded by seven permanent glaciers. Summer activities include hiking, fishing, paragliding, kayaking and rafting, but Girdwood is best known for winter skiing and snowboarding at Alyeska Resort on Mount Alyeska. Girdwood also hosts the Girdwood Forest Fair every summer. Girdwood has the northernmost rain forest in the world and some of the most spectacular scenery in the state. Originally called Glacier City, Girdwood was founded as a supply camp for placer gold miners and was renamed for Colonel James Girdwood, a Belfast-born, Scots-Irish entrepreneur and linen merchant who staked the first four gold claims along Crow Creek in 1896. A drive south from Girdwood on the Seward Highway takes travelers along one of this countrys most amazingly beautiful stretches of road, where the waters of Turnagain Arm meets the mountains.

Girdwood Weather & Climate

South-central Alaska has a subarctic climate, with strong oceanic influences. This region gets less rain, but more snow, than the southeast Panhandle region. Summers are short and cool to mild, and winters are long and cold. There are frequent, strong southeast winds, known as the Knik wind, in this area, especially in the winter. Rains are frequent in late summer. The number of frost-free summer days number 101. The latitude in this region causes summer days to be very long and winter days to be very short. It is also generally very cloudy during winter. Due to the proximity to active volcanoes, ash hazards may occur and are significant, but not frequent.
