Moose-Pass is located on the Kenai Peninsula in south-central Alaska. The population was 219 residents as of the 2010 census. Surrounded by the Chugach National Forest, Moose Pass sits in the heart of the Kenai Peninsula along the shoreline of Upper Trail Lake. There are many, many hiking trails in the Moose Pass area, especially within the Chugach National Forest. The village of Moose Pass also celebrates the Summer Solstice each year with a two-day festival. The community gathers to celebrate the longest day of the year with games, music, food and lots of family fun. The Kenai Peninsula is also home to Kenai Fjords National Park and Kachemak Bay State Park, with tons of wildlife, including sea otters, sea lions, humpback and orca whales, harbor seals, and more. Activities on the peninsula include hiking, backpacking, kayaking, canoeing, fishing, tide-pooling, camping, dog-sledding, flight-seeing, and golf. Moose Pass began in 1909 when Oscar Christensen and Mickey Natt arrived by horse and dog sled to build a roadhouse to serve the miners in the area. An attraction in town is a ten-foot waterwheel built in 1980 that is a replica of the original one built in 1927. The waterwheel has a saw attached to it for sharpening of knives and axes. A sign on it reads "Moose Pass is a peaceful little town. If you have an axe to grind, do it here."

Moose Pass Weather & Climate

South-central Alaska's Kenai Peninsula is a piece of land that juts out from the southern coast of the state into the Gulf of Alaska. The peninsula has a coastal climate that is relatively mild, by Alaska's standards. The climate is heavily influenced by the Northern Pacific Ocean. The annual precipitation is very high in relation to other parts of the state, and the lack of extreme cold or hot temperatures speak of the maritime influence. The Kenai Peninsula is one of the few areas in Alaska that allows for agriculture, with a growing season long enough for producing hay and several other crops.
