Whittier
is a port city located in southern Alaska on the western edge of Prince William Sound. It's about 62 miles southeast of Anchorage. The population of Whittier is between around 400 residents. The city is an important port for the Alaska Marine Highway, and cruise lines use the deep port as a departure for their Gulf of Alaska Tours. Therefore, Whittier has a large number of visitors that stay just for the day. However, there's lots to do in the area, should you choose to stay longer. Whittier offers kayaking, fishing and glacier cruises. The city is also known for its' unique 2.5-mile-long tunnel that separates it from Alaska's road system. The tunnel is shared by alternating one-way auto and railroad traffic. The Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel, called the Whittier Tunnel or Portage Tunnel by locals, goes through Maynard Mountain. It links to the Seward Highway and it's the only land access to the town of Whittier. At 13,330 feet, it's the second longest highway tunnel, and the longest combined highway and railroad tunnel, in North America. Another attraction in Whittier is the government-owned Buckner Building, which was once the largest building in Alaska. In 1964, a 9.2 earthquake caused serious damage to the building and it now stands abandoned. The Buckner Building is often visited by tourists and is somewhat of a "hangout" for local kids, but its' structural integrity is not safe. Also, bears are often found inside the building in spring, and ice in the winter, along with dangling wires, pipes and substructure.

Whittier Weather & Climate
South-central Alaska has a subarctic climate, with strong oceanic influences. This region gets less rain, but more snow, than the southeast Panhandle region. Summers are short and cool to mild, and winters are long and cold. There are frequent, strong southeast winds, known as the Knik wind, in this area, especially in the winter. Rains are frequent in late summer. The number of frost-free summer days number 101. The latitude in this region causes summer days to be very long and winter days to be very short. It is also generally very cloudy during winter. Due to the proximity to active volcanoes, ash hazards may occur and are significant, but not frequent.
