Kachemak-Bay is located on the southwest side of the Kenai Peninsula, which is a large peninsula on the southern coast of Alaska. Kachemak Bay is a 40-mile long arm of Cook Inlet with the communities of Homer, Halibut Cover, Seldovia, Nanwalek, Port Graham and Kachemak City along its' shores. Kachemak Bay is also home to Kachemak Bay State Park, which is Alaska' only state wilderness park. There is no road access to most of the park; visitors must arrive by boat or plane. A large national estuarine research reserve is located at Kachemak Bay. The bay is remarkable in that it hosts a huge level of biological activity. This is due in part to water circulation patterns which keep shellfish larvae and nutrients in the bay. While surface waters push nutrients out into the bay, ocean currents push them back into the bay, creating a very fertile environment, so fish and shellfish are abundant year-round. The bay is also the winter home to 90 percent of the seabird and waterfowl populations of Lower Cook Inlet, while otters, seals, porpoise and whales are seen in the bay all year long. Kachemak Bay State Park and Kachemak Bay Wilderness Park cover 400,000 acres around the bay and offers both sandy and rocky beaches. Lush mountain forests rise up to meet glaciers and ice fields at the higher elevations. It's a wild wilderness area, and come prepared when visiting for unpredictable weather conditions. Sudden rainstorms, wind or snowstorms can pop up at any time of the year, especially at the higher elevations. The park ranger station for Kachemak Bay State Park is located at Halibut Cove Lagoon.

Kachemak Bay Weather & Climate

South-central Alaska has a subarctic climate classification, with strong oceanic influences. This part of Alaska gets less rain, but more snow, than the southeast Panhandle region. Summers are short and cool to mild, and winters are long and cold. There are frequent, strong southeast winds, known as the Knik wind, in this area, especially in the wintertime. Rains are frequent in late summer, but not abundant in amount. The number of frost-free summer days number 101. The latitude in this region causes summer days to be very long and winter days to be very short. It is also generally very cloudy during winter. Due to the proximity to active volcanoes, ash hazards may occur and are significant, but not frequent.
