Anchor-Point is a small community located on the Kenai Peninsula in southern Alaska. The population is approximately 2,000. Anchor Point is home to "North America's Most Westerly Highway Point," in the North American Highway System. It's a friendly town that offers an abundance of year-round outdoor recreational opportunities. Called "the fun capital" of the Kenai Peninsula, choose from hiking, river or saltwater fishing, bicycling, camping, cross-country skiing, ice fishing, wildlife viewing, scenic drives and more. The local economy relies heavily on tourism, especially on those who come to fish the Anchor River. King Salmon season on the Anchor River begins the weekend prior to Memorial Day and runs for five consecutive weekends. Then, the river reopens July 1st for all other species, other than King Salmon, and continues until the river freezes. Pink Salmon can be found in the river from early July through late August, and Silver Salmon from latter July through August. Other attractions include a viewing deck with telescopes that marks "North America's Most Westerly Highway Point." It offers spectacular scenery and views of Cook Inlet, so be sure to bring your camera! Wildlife frequently seen in the area include beaver and river otter, bald eagles, brown and black bear, coyote, fox, wolves, moose, and seals and sea otters offshore. Anchor Point is also home to several special events throughout the year, including snowshoe softball in the winter and a special 4th of July celebration.

Anchor Point Weather & Climate

South-central Alaska has a subarctic climate classification, with strong oceanic influences. This part of Alaska gets less rain, but more snow, than the southeast Panhandle region. Summers are short and cool to mild, and winters are long and cold. There are frequent, strong southeast winds, known as the Knik wind, in this area, especially in the wintertime. Rains are frequent in late summer, but not abundant in amount. The number of frost-free summer days number 101. The latitude in this region causes summer days to be very long and winter days to be very short. It is also generally very cloudy during winter. Due to the proximity to active volcanoes, ash hazards may occur and are significant, but not frequent.
