Homer
is vibrant, eclectic town, located on the Kenai Peninsula in southern Alaska. As of the 2010 census, the population was 5,003. Homer is known for being the terminus of the paved highway system of North America. Thus, it's a popular destination for people traveling to Alaska from the lower 48 U.S. states. As it sits at the end of the Sterling Highway, Homer was made famous as "The End of the Road" by American travel author and radio host, Tom Bodett. The town is full of friendly, free-spirited, artsy, outdoorsy people. With its' location on the shores of Kachemak Bay, surrounded by beautiful mountains, Homer is spectacular for fishing, kayaking, hiking, biking and wildlife viewing, especially for bear. In fact, the town is known as the Ecotourism and Adventure Capital of Alaska. The Homer Spit is the second longest in the world and was recently named as one of the Best 100 Beaches in the United States. Guided tours are available, and the town serves as the jumping off point for ferry, boat and planes headed into the remote wilderness areas of Alaska. Homer is also home to several museums, art galleries and fine dining. Each spring, the arrival of the migratory birds are celebrated with the Kachemak Bay Shorebird Festival.

Homer Weather & Climate
South-central Alaska has a subarctic climate classification, with strong oceanic influences. This part of Alaska gets less rain, but more snow, than the southeast Panhandle region. Summers are short and cool to mild, and winters are long and cold. There are frequent, strong southeast winds, known as the Knik wind, in this area, especially in the wintertime. Rains are frequent in late summer, but not abundant in amount. The number of frost-free summer days number 101. The latitude in this region causes summer days to be very long and winter days to be very short. It is also generally very cloudy during winter. Due to the proximity to active volcanoes, ash hazards may occur and are significant, but not frequent.
