Petersburg
is a small city located on the north end of Mitkof Island in the southeastern panhandle region of Alaska. The population is approximately 2,800 residents. The town of Petersburg sits in a picturesque area where the Wrangell Narrows meets the Frederick Sound. It's about halfway between the cities of Juneau and Ketchikan. Petersburg is a charming fishing village that was originally homesteaded by a Norwegian immigrant, Peter Buschmann. By the early 1900s, there were so many people of Scandinavian heritage in the area, it was called "Little Norway." The city of Petersburg offers visitors lots of outdoor activities, including exploring Sandy Beach Park, bird watching at Eagle View Park, whale watching, hiking, camping, and plenty of shopping and restaurant options. Other attractions in town include the Sons of Norway Hall, which is a national historic site that provides seasonal entertainment and dining. Accommodations in the area include hotels, motels, inns and bed and breakfasts, as well as RV parks, cabins and hostels.
