Wrangell is the name of an island, borough and a city in the southeastern Panhandle region of Alaska. As of the 2010 census, the population was 2,369 residents. The city of Wrangell is located on the northwest tip of Wrangell Island. It's across the Zimovia Strait at the mouth of the Stikine River (which is on the mainland Alaska) about 155 miles south of the city of Juneau. Wrangell was founded by Russians and is one of the oldest non-Native communities in Alaska. The only other community on Wrangell Island is Thoms Place on the southwest side. The island, as well as many other surrounding places, offer an abundance of recreational opportunities. Wrangell Island has it all - history and native culture, incredible scenery and wildlife and unlimited outdoor adventures and activities. The protected waters of the Inside Passage provide excellent sea kayaking. Wildlife charter tours and fishing tours are available and hundreds of miles of trails are available for hikers, bikers, and skiers. All five species of salmon, as well as halibut, are found in the waters offshore, while lakes and streams provide fly fishing and spin cast fishing. Wrangell is also home to the only regulation UGA rated golf course in southeast Alaska. Other attractions in Wrangell include the Tlingit Chief Shakes Island and Tribal House Historic Monument and the Petroglyph Beach State Historic Park. Flightseeing is another way to see the islands' glaciers, fjords and wildlife.

Wrangell Weather & Climate

The Alexander Archipelago  in the southeastern Panhandle Region, has a humid continental climate - although it's just short of being subactic. The climate is milder than one would expect due to the influence of the Pacific Ocean. Winters are long and wet, but only slightly cold. The average low temperature is 21, and highs are frequently above freezing. Spring, summer, and fall are cool to mild. Snowfall in this region averages 84 inches and occurs mainly from November to March. Precipitation is adequate year-round, ranging from 55 inches to 90 inches depending on location. Spring is the driest season, while September and October are the wettest months.
