North-Pole
is known worldwide for being home to Santa Claus. It's a small city, located in north-central Alaska in the Fairbanks North Star Borough. It's only 13 miles southeast of Fairbanks on the Richardson Highway. As of July, 2009, the population was 2,226. North Pole is a popular place to visit anytime of the year. It originated as a homestead site in 1944 by Bon V. Davis. It was later bought by the Dahl and Gaske Development Company and named the North Pole in the hopes of bringing in toy manufacturing to the area. The city incorporated in 1953. The toy endeavor failed, but North Pole continued to grow as a "Christmas City." Many streets bear holiday names: Santa Claus Lane, Snowman Lane, Kris Kringle, Mistletoe, Holiday Rd., Saint Nicholas Drive, North Star Drive, Blitzen, and Donnor. Street lights are decorated in candy cane motifs and many buildings are painted with Christmas colors and designs. The Santa Claus house, the "official" home of Santa Claus, is one of the main attractions in the city. Live reindeer and Santa Claus are available for photographs year round. The gift shop in site was the original trading post that dates back to the 1950s. Each year the community starts the holiday season with a candle lighting ceremony and tree lighting event the first Sunday in December. Other things to do in North Pole include canoeing, kayaking, swimming, picnicking and camping. An annual North Pole Summer Festival is held on July 4th. More information is available at the North Pole Visitors Center, located on the Richardson Highway and Mission Avenue.

North Pole Weather & Climate
East-central interior Alaska has a subarctic climate with long cold winters, and short, warm summers. The weather is extreme, and a true example of a subarctic climate. Some of the coldest and warmest temperatures are seen in this region. Winter typically lasts from late September/early October until late April/early May. On average, the season's first snow falls around September 21, with a snowpack established by October 18. Snow occurs in large amounts, and remains on the ground until May. In winter, the direction of the wind causes large variations in temperature.
When coupled with a chinook wind, temperatures stay well above freezing. Ice fog is also possible. This happens when air is too cold to absorb additional moisture. A notable meteorological occurrence in this region is the northern lights, which are visible on average more than 200 days per year.
