Fairbanks
is the largest city in the Interior Region of Alaska and the 2nd largest in the state (behind Anchorage.) As of the 2010 census, the population was 31,535, with a population of 97,581 in the entire metropolitan area. Fairbanks is home to the University of Alaska Fairbanks, which is the oldest college in the state. The city lies in the central Tanana Valley along the Chena River near its' confluence with the Tanana River. There are many scenic streams and rivers in the area and the foothills of the White Mountains lie to the north of the city. There is no limit on the number of activities in Fairbanks. Outdoor sports include hiking, fishing, biking, canoeing, golf, gold panning, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, and dog sledding. Also, because Fairbanks is just 188 miles south of the Arctic Circle, it's one of the best places on earth for viewing the spectacular northern lights. The city sits within a region called the "auroral oval" that provides the best balance of northern lights occurrence, frequency and activity. The best times to view are between late August and April. Fairbanks is also home to the Tanana Valley State Fair, the Alaska Aviation Heritage Museum, the Alaska Bird Observatory, the Festival of Native Arts, the Midnight Sun Intertribal Pow Wow and so much more. You can view the area from helicopter or plane, take nature and wildlife tours, and glacier cruises. There are exciting things to do in Fairbanks every day of the week and in every season of the year.

Fairbanks Weather & Climate
East-central interior Alaska has a subarctic climate with long cold winters, and short, warm summers. The weather is extreme, and a true example of a subarctic climate. Some of the coldest and warmest temperatures are seen in this region. Winter typically lasts from late September/early October until late April/early May. On average, the season's first snow falls around September 21, with a snowpack established by October 18. Snow occurs in large amounts, and remains on the ground until May. In winter, the direction of the wind causes large variations in temperature.
When coupled with a chinook wind, temperatures stay well above freezing. Ice fog is also possible. This happens when air is too cold to absorb additional moisture. A notable meteorological occurrence in this region is the northern lights, which are visible on average more than 200 days per year.
