Elfin-Cove is the name of a tiny community tucked into the harbor on the northwestern corner of Chichagof Island in southeastern Alaska. The population of the village is about 50 residents. It's about 33 miles west of Hoonah and 70 miles west of Juneau and sits across from Glacier Bay National Park. The harbor at Elfin Cove was once known as Gunkhole by fishermen anchoring there. It's a picturesque flask-shaped harbor that is safe anchorage near the Fairweather fishing grounds. The village is a fish-buying and supply center for fishermen. Several summer lodges are also located in the area. Elfin Cove is known for its' world-class sport fishing in what is known as Alaska's "Fish Country." Elfin Cove is part of Chichagof Island, which is directly opposite Baranof Island. The Peril Strait separates the two islands. Activities in the area include fishing, guided hunting trips, charter fishing, hiking, kayaking, wildlife viewing and photography. The village also has a few businesses that cater to the tourists that come for the fishing.

Elfin Cove Weather & Climate

The Southeastern Panhandle of Alaska has a humid continental climate classification, although it borders on being a subarctic climate. The moderating influence comes from the close proximity to the Pacific Ocean. Winters are long and moist - cold, but not frigid. January highs are frequently above freezing. Spring, summer and autumn are cool to mild. Snowfall averages 84 inches and occurs mainly from November through March. Yearly rainfall varies, depending on location, but averages between 55 to 90 inches. Spring is the driest season and September and October are the wettest months. Some have described this region as "a cooler version of Seattle."
