Chickaloon
is village (census-designated place) in south-central Alaska, near the town of Wasilla. As of the 2010 census, the population was 272 residents. Chickaloon's western boundary is roughly the Kings River and it's eastern boundary is roughly the Purinton Creek. The Talkeetna Mountains lie to the northwest, and the Chugach Mountains and Matanuska River lie to the southeast. Several lakes are located near Chickaloon, including Fish Lake, Drill Lake, Bonnie Lake, Harrison Lake and Long Lake. Historically, this region was a center of trade for the Ahtna, and before that the Dena'ina, Athabascans. The Chickaloon River was named for Chief Chiklu, who was the last Denaiina chief in this area. What is now the community of Chickaloon, was once a major fishing camp of the tribe. In 1898, a U.S. Army exploration party located a vein of high-quality coal near the Chickaloon River. However, it wasn't until the construction of the Alaska Railroad in 1914 that it began to produce results. From 1915 to 1922, the coal mines provided jobs and the town of Chickaloon began to grow quickly. Like many other Alaska mining towns, however, it declined just as quickly. By 1925, the Navy stopped coal development in Chickaloon, and the land reverted to public domain and was opened to homesteaders by 1958. Today, the small village is home to many Chickaloon Village Tribal members and other residents. There are a few local businesses that provide employment and services for residents and visitors.

Chickaloon Weather & Climate
South-central Alaska has a subarctic climate, with strong oceanic influences. This part of Alaska gets less rain, but more snow, than the southeast Panhandle region. Summers are short and cool to mild, and winters are long and cold. There are frequent, strong southeast winds, known as the Knik wind, in this area, especially in the winter. Rains are frequent in late summer, but not abundant. The number of frost-free summer days number 101. The latitude in this region causes summer days to be very long and winter days to be very short. It is also generally very cloudy during winter. Due to the proximity to active volcanoes, ash hazards may occur and are significant, but not frequent.
