Yakutat
is a town and borough that is located in the southeast Alaska Panhandle region. According to the 2010 census, the population was 662. The borough is not only one of the largest in Alaska, but one of the largest in the U.S. The only other community in Yakutat Borough is Icy Bay. Yakutat sits along the rugged Gulf of Alaska between the towns of Sitka and Cordova. It's bounded by the Gulf of Alaska on the South, mountains to the North, and coastal glaciers to the East and West. Yakutat is a remote village. There are no roads leading into or out of it - access is via air or sea only. The town's airport has daily commercial service to Juneau, Anchorage and Seattle. Yakutat is within and surrounded by the Tongass National Forests, Wrangell St-Elias National Park and Preserve, and Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve. Life on Yukatut is pure Alaska - gorgeous mountains and river, sea life, wildlife and birds. One of the most unique features is Hubbar Glacier, which is North America's largest tide-water glacier. In spite of its' isolation, Yakutat is an active tourist spot. There are several services for visitors and activities include hiking, exploring the bays and passages, birdwatching, mountain climbing, and some of the best saltwater sport fishing in Alaska. Yakutat is also host to the annual Tern Festival.
