Valdez
is located in southeast Alaska and has the largest port on Prince William Sound. As of the 2010 census, the population was 3,976. Valdez is first and foremost a fishing port, but freight also moves through it on the way to the interior of Alaska. The town also supports a fairly large tourist trade, offering deep-sea fishing, heli skiing, and as one of the best vantage points for viewing glaciers and sea life and wildlife. Valdez is pure Alaska. The crashing glaciers and towering Chugach mountains rise from the sea offering some of the most spectacular natural beauty in the state. The area is home to whales, mountain goats, sea otters, seals, puffins, sea lions, shorebirds and much more. Some of the activities in Valdez include glacier and wildlife tour boats, fishing boat charters, kayaking, camping, hiking, downhill and cross-country skiing, snowboarding, dog sledding and ice climbing. You can also take a helicopter tour of the mountains, glaciers and wildlife of Prince William Sound, and guided raft trips past the towering waterfalls of Keystone Canyon. Valdez also offers the ultimate in backcountry snowmobiling with miles of pristine snow. More than 300 inches of the powder is measured annually in the city and 600 - 900 in nearby Thompson Pass. Valdez really does have something for everyone - whether you're a seasoned ice climber or looking for a place to experience the untamed beauty of the last frontier.

Prince William Sound, in southern Alaska,is located near the head of a deep fjord and surrounded by the Chugach Mountains, which are heavily glaciated. The northernmost point of the coastal Pacific temperate rainforest is in the region. Despite the presence of the rainforest, however, the region has a subarctic climate classification. Winters, though much warmer than most climates of this type, are not mild enough to be classified in the subpolar oceanic climate category. According to the NOAA, this region is the snowiest place in the United States, with an average of 326 inches of snow per year. This is the northernmost port in North America that is ice-free year-round.
