Talkeetna
is small community in south-central Alaska, about 115 miles north of Anchorage, and 14 miles off the Parks Highway. The population was 876 as of the 2010 census. The town of Talkeetna is often said to be the inspiration behind the popular television series "Northern Exposure." The town of Talkeetna also serves as the main staging area for climbers waiting to start their Mt. McKinley ascents. The town offers visitors some true Alaskan small-town atmosphere, but with easy access to a variety of nice accommodations, including two nearby lodges. The area surrounding Talkeetna is often referred to as South Denali Park due to its strategic location near the southern border of both the National and State Denali Parks. It's also known as having some of the very best flight seeing trips in the whole state of Alaska. Other outdoor activities include fishing, mountain biking, rafting, hiking, camping, jetboat trips and hunting. The downtown area of Talkeetna is a National Historic Site, with buildings dating from the early 1900s including Nagleys General Store and the Talkeetna Roadhouse. Talkeetna is host to several special events, including Winterfest, which takes place during the whole month of December. It features a motorized Parade of Lights, a lighted tree in the Village Park, a Taste of Talkeetna, and more. Each March, the Oosik Classic Ski Race is organized by the Denali Nordic Ski Club, and the town is also host to The Oosik Cross-country Skiing Classic.

South-central Alaska has a subarctic climate with long winters and brief springs, summers and winters. This part of Alaska gets less rain, but more snow, than the southeast region. Summers are short and mild, and winters are long and cold. There are frequent, strong southeast winds, known as the Knik wind, in this area, especially in the winter. Rains are frequent in late summer, but don't produce abundant totals. The number of frost-free summer days number 100. The latitude in this region causes summer days to be very long and winter days to be very short. It is also generally very cloudy during winter. Due to the proximity to active volcanoes, ash hazards may occur and are significant, but not frequent. Ice fog is another possbility in the wintertime.
