Northway is a tiny community located in southeastern Alaska, near the Canadian border. It's considered part of the Southeast Fairbanks Metropolitan Census Area. As of the 2010 census, the population of Northway was 71 full-time residents. The community of Northway lies off the Alaska Highway and is actually the first town drivers reach as they arrive to Alaska from Canada. The town is connected to the Alaska Highway by an unpaved road. Northway is approximately 50 miles southeast of the town of Tok, and for convenience, there is a shuttle between Tok and Northway three times a week that also has connections to Fairbanks and Anchorage. There is also a state-owned 5,100-foot runway in the town, and regular flights are available to Fairbanks. This region has been occupied by the semi-nomadic Athabaskan Natives for centuries. The Native settlement of Northway Village is two miles south of the town of Northway. Most people in Northway work for the airport, but there is also a motel, cafe, bar and pool hall, and a grocery store.

Northway Weather & Climate

East-central Alaska, ,near the Canadian border, has the most extreme weather, in terms of temperature range. The continental location, isolated by the Alaska Range to the south and the Brooks Range to the north, has a great influence on the climate. Temperatures in the summer may climb into the 80s (F.) during the summer, and dip to minus -40 F and minus-50F or lower in the wintertime. The mountain ranges also limit the amount of precipitation that falls in this region. Often less than 10 inches (250 mm) falls a year, but what precipitation falls during the winter tends to stay throughout the season. Precipitation increases by 10 to 40 percent when the Pacific decadal oscillation is positive.
