Ketchikan is the southernmost city in Alaska, located on Revillagigedo Island, about 90 miles north of Prince Repert, British Columbia, Canada. As of the 2010 census, the population was 14,070. It's the fifth most populous city in Alaska. Ketchikan is known as the "Salmon Capital of the World" and it's economy is heavily invested in fishing and tourism. It's named for the Ketchikan Creek, which flows through the city. Attractions include the world's biggest collection of standing totem poles. They're found throughout the city, but are concentrated in three major locations: Saxman Totem Park, Totem Bight State Park, and the Totem Heritage Center. The Heritage Center displays the most preserved 19th century poles. Some of the poles at the two parks are recarvings of original totems. Ketchikan is near the Misty Fjords National Monument and is another major attraction to the city. The area lies about 40 miles east of the city, along the Inside Passage coastline. It covers over two million acres of the Tongass National Forest, most of it designated Wilderness National Monument. The area is called "the Yosemite of the North" due to its similar geological features as the famous California park. Granite that is estimated to be between 50 to 70 million years old has been sculpted by glaciers into spectacular gorges and valleys that rise 2,000 to 3,000 feet above sea level, and drop 1,000 feet below. Things to do at Ketchikan include fishing, kayaking, wildlife viewing, hiking and wilderness camping.

Ketchikan Weather & Climate

The southeastern panhandle of Alaska, has a humid continental climate, although it borders on being a subarctic climate. The moderating influence comes from the proximity to the Pacific Ocean. Winters are long and moist - cold, but not frigid. January highs are frequently above freezing. Spring, summer and autumn are cool to mild. Snowfall averages 84 inches and occurs mainly from November through March. Yearly rainfall varies, depending on location, but averages between 55 to 90 inches. Spring is the driest season and September and October are the wettest months. Some have described this region as "a cooler version of Seattle."
