Kasilof
is a small community (a "census-designated place") located on the Kenai Peninsula in southern Alaska. As of 2010, the population was 549 residents. In 1786, a stockade was built by the Russians at the site of what is now Kasilof. It was then named Saint George, most likely after one of the ships of the Russian company. An agricultural settlement of Denaina people grew up around the stockade. The area later became known as Kasilof after the Kasilof River. In 1937, a partial excavation of the area uncovered 31 well-preserved houses from the original settlement. Things to do in the area around Kasilof include world-class fishing, rafting, canoeing, kayaking, hiking, biking, wildlife watching, marine wildlife cruises - even gold panning. Several other villages and towns are located on the peninsula, including the village of Halibut Cove, home to many artists and art galleries. The Kenai Peninsula extends about 150 miles southwest from the Chugach Mountains. It's separated from the mainland on the west by Cook Inlet and on the east by Prince William Sound. The peninsula is also home to Kenai Fjords National Park and Kachemak Bay State Park.

Kasilof Weather & Climate
South-central Alaska has a subarctic climate, with strong oceanic influences. This part of Alaska gets less rain, but more snow, than the southeast Panhandle region. Summers are short and cool to mild, and winters are long and cold. There are frequent, strong southeast winds, known as the Knik wind, in this area, especially in the winter. Rains are frequent in late summer, but not abundant. The number of frost-free summer days number 101. The latitude in this region causes summer days to be very long and winter days to be very short. It is also generally very cloudy during winter. Due to the proximity to active volcanoes, ash hazards may occur and are significant, but not frequent.
