Juneau
is located in the southeast panhandle region of the state of Alaska. It has been the capital of the state since 1906. As of July 2011, the population of Juneau was 32,164 residents. The city of Juneau is nestled at the base of Mt. Juneau and is about the size of the states of Rhode Island and Delaware combined. Atop the mountains surrounding the city is the Juneau Icefield, which is a large ice mass from which about 30 glaciers flow. Two of the glaciers, the Mendenhall Glacier and the Lemon Creek Glacier, are visible from the road. Things to do in Juneau include sea kayaking, hiking, rafting, dog-sledding, skiing, heli-skiing, cross-country skiing and snowboarding. Fishing is prime in the region, whether you charter a boat or fish from the shore. The scenery is what you'd expect of Alaska - stunning mountains, crystal-clear rivers and streams and lush forests. Wildlife viewing is another adventure that many enjoy, and the region surrounding Juneau is full of air, land and sea creatures, such as humpback whales, bald eagles and bear. Juneau is a vibrant city with a good variety of small-town hospitality and big-city amenities, including fine seafood restaurants and shops featuring Native artwork and other specialty items.

Juneau Weather & Climate
The Southeastern Panhandle Region of Alaska has a humid continental climate, although it borders on being a subarctic climate. The moderating influence comes from the proximity to the Pacific Ocean. Winters are long and moist - cold, but not frigid. January highs are frequently above freezing. Spring, summer and autumn are cool to mild. Snowfall averages 84 inches and occurs mainly from November through March. Yearly rainfall varies, depending on location, but averages between 55 to 90 inches. Spring is the driest season and September and October are the wettest months. Some have described this region as "a cooler version of Seattle."
