Cantwell
is a tiny village located off Parks Highway in central, interior Alaska. The population of the community is around 220. Cantwell is the western terminus of the Denali Highway. The town was originally a railway flag stop at the junction of the railroad with the Denali Highway. Other things noteworthy about Cantwell: it is 20 miles from a giant abandoned igloo hotel, and it was the filming location of the 2007 film, "Into the Wild." Cantwell is near Denali National Park & Preserve. Home to Mount McKinley, the tallest mountain in North America. Activities in Denali National Park include hiking and backpacking, whitewater rafting, dog-sledding, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling (or snowmachining as it's called in Alaska,) and wildlife viewing. Some of the wildlife you may encounter roaming the unfenced lands include caribou, grizzly bears, fox, wolves, moose, Dall's sheep - in total, 39 species of mammals, 169 species of birds and 14 species of fish. Tundra wilderness tours and natural history tours are available, as are tours to the old gold town of Kantishna. The single 92-mile road is the only access through the six-million acre national park. Visitors may drive it only as far as the Savage River at Mile 15. From there, travel is limited to tour buses, bicycles and on foot.

Cantwell Weather & Climate
Central Alaska has a climate of long, cold winters and short, cool summers. Weather in this region is very unpredictable. Temperatures of 70 degrees in summer is common, yet it's also been known to snow in August. The north and south side of the Alaskan Range Mountains have a completely different climate. The Gulf of Alaska carries moisture to the south side, but the mountains block water to the north side. This means a drier climate and huge temperature fluctuations to the north. The south has a transitional maritime continental climate, with cooler, summers and warmer winters.
