Anderson is a small town located in Denali Borough in central Alaska. The population is around 370 full-time residents. Anderson is approximately 76 miles southwest of Fairbanks. Clear Air Force Station (Air National Guard) is located within the city limits. The town of Anderson is named for Arthur Anderson who was one of the original homesteaders in the 1950s. Mr. Anderson divided up his homestead into house lots and sold most of them to civilian workers at Clear Air Force Station. There isn't a lot in the town; the nearest gas station and grocery store is a 20-mile drive away. But, it is beautiful and woodsy, peaceful and quiet, and it does have a post office and a school. In 2007, in an effort to attract more residents to Anderson, the city offered free land to interested applicants. Several plots were given away, although some owners never completed the requirement of actually building a home in Anderson. The main attraction in the area is the Denali National Park and Preserve, which contains Mt. McKinley, the highest mountain peak in North America. The national park contains over six-million acres of forest, tundra, rock, glaciers and snow. The longest glacier in the park is Kahiltna Glacier. Over 400,000 people per year visit Denali National Park for the scenery, wildlife viewing, dog-sledding, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling and backpacking. The town of Anderson is also host to an annual Bluegrass Festival the last weekend of July.

Anderson Weather & Climate

Central Alaska has a climate of long, cold winters and short, cool summers. Weather in this region is very unpredictable. Temperatures of 70 degrees in summer is common, yet it's also been known to snow in August. The north and south side of the Alaskan Range Mountains have a completely different climate. The Gulf of Alaska carries moisture to the south side, but the mountains block water to the north side. This means a drier climate and huge temperature fluctuations to the north. The south has a transitional maritime continental climate, with cooler, summers and warmer winters.
