Akhiok is a small town located on Kodiak Island off the southern coast of Alaska. As of the 2010 census, the population was 71 residents. Akhiok is Kodiak Island's southernmost village. In the early 1800s, Russians established a sea otter hunting settlement at Humpy Cove in this area. By 1881, residents had moved to the present site at Alitak Bay due to a switch to fishing as their main source of livelihood. Fishing is still the main industry for villagers who are involved directly in fishing for salmon and halibut, or work in a nearby cannery. Akhiok encompasses 7.9 square miles of land and 2.5 square miles of water. A federally-recognized tribe is located in the community - the Native Village of Akhiok; Kodiak Island Inter-Tribal Council. There are lots of recreational activities on Kodiak Island, including hiking, biking, kayaking, fishing, camping, beachcombing, etc. Keep in mind, however, that if you plan to stay on the island, arrangements for lodging should be made in advance, especially if you're visiting during peak season of May through August.
